The Owner-Dependency Diagnostic.
Seven questions. Five minutes. A score that tells you how saleable your business is today, and what is in the way.
Score yourself honestly. Then act.
Each question scores 0–3. Total is out of 21. Below 10 means your business depends on you. Below 5 means it cannot be sold at any reasonable multiple. The diagnostic is from the methodology we use on every Autopilot engagement.
Where the number puts you.
0–7: Owner-trapped
The business depends on you for survival, not just direction. It cannot be sold at a meaningful multiple. The work to fix this is structural and takes 12–24 months but the gain is large: the multiple roughly doubles when you cross from this band to the next.
8–14: Owner-led
The business runs with you at the centre but does not collapse when you step away. Sellable at a key-person discount of 20–40%. Six to twelve months of focused operational work moves you to the top band and removes the discount.
15–21: Investable
The business has the operating system of a sellable company. A buyer can value the asset, not the founder. You have optionality: sell at a premium, franchise the model, hold and grow, or step back into a strategic-only role.
